How are you thinking about the 2020 Coronavirus?
What’s your perspective on our current situation? Are you just weathering the storm or are you looking for new opportunities and new growth in the midst of the challenges?
Let’s talk about today’s challenges from the perspective of Acceptance. Many people are not fans of this word “Acceptance:” we can think of acceptance as abnegating control or responsibility. The problem is, if we don’t have true acceptance, we can’t make the clear and focused decisions we need to make in the face of uncertainty. Without acceptance, we’ll be blinded to the possibilities in front of us.
There are six ways of looking at Acceptance. Let’s check them out.
#1: I’m miserable but I can’t change it
#2: This stinks, and I don’t like it
#3: I’ll find a way to make this work
#4: I’ll figure out how to fix this and make it better for all of us
#5: I wonder what opportunity this situation holds
#6: This is what it is, and it is a valuable experience
In perspectives #1 and #2, there really is no acceptance: I’m either resigned and a victim, or I’m angry and looking for somewhere to place blame. In perspective #3, I’m tolerating the situation and trying to make lemonade out of lemons. It’s only in perspective #5 that true acceptance begins and I can start to access whatever positive opportunities my experience is presenting to me.
Think about your situation right now. Which perspective are you operating out of? What would happen if you could operate from a different perspective? What would you need to change in order to get there?
